Website Statistics
If you want to know what kind of traffic your website is getting, you can check your website statistics. These stats are updated daily, are very thorough and all history is retained in there too. You can find out how many people are visiting, what days of the week, what hours of the day, where they came from, what they typed to find you, etc. It also provides a great way to monitor your online advertising dollars as you'll be able to tell exactly how many people came to your site from someone else's site.
Checking Your Stats - In your control panel (if you are unsure how to access this, contact us), scroll down to the 'Logs' section. These are all programs that will tell you information about your website traffic. I personally like and only use 'Awstats'. You are free to look at them all and find one you like too. If you click the 'Awstats' icon, then also click the magnifying glass next to your domain name. This will give you detailed stats of everything you want to know about your site. On the left are a bunch of links and on the right, summary information that is based on the reporting period you choose at the top. Knock yourself out. The number of visits is how many visitors you are getting to the site. Unique Visitors are how many unique visitors came to your site. For instance, one person might visit your site several times that month, but it only gets counted as 1 unique visitor while maybe racking up 4 visits.
Hits vs. Visitors - Don't be misled! The word "hits" does NOT mean visitors. It means how many times your web browser "hit" the server to request information from it. A page on your website might require hitting the server 10-20 times until it retrieves all the images and information it needs to load the page. If someone is selling you on the number of "hits" their site gets, you can ask them how many visitors they get and explain the difference to them.
